When someone mention something about Japanese noodle, the first thing that came into our mind is none other than R.A.M.E.N right? There is actually more than that such as soba, udon soumen etc. YW and I have been searching around Tokyo for good ramen for the past few years but recently we started a new trend by searching for new つけ麺 (tsu-ke-men) shop instead.
You must be wondering "What is tsukemen?".
つけ (tsu-ke), meaning dip, and 麺 = noodle, which literally translate the whole term to "dip noodle". Basically the noodle and and soup is separated and only a mouthful of noodle is eaten after dipping in the soup. Caution not to put too much noodle into the soup at once!
Thanks to YW, we found this one-of-its-kind tsukemen shop located at Shinjuku area name 五ノ神製作所 (Read as: Go-no-ka-mi Sei-sa-ku-jo). The broth is made of prawn instead of the typical shōyu (soy sauce) or miso. I hated tsukemen once upon a time because they are so tasteless and cold (the noodle is cold) but I fell in love after trying this for the very first time.

The shop has a very modern design infused with Japanese element. They are actually run by young people that look like hipsters because they do not wear any work uniform! haha. Nonetheless, I like it when there is open counter seat like this whenever I am in a ramen/tsukemen shop.

Hey look! Their chopsticks are made of bamboo!

I got fascinated by this huge dice put in front of us. It is actually a simple menu to tell customers that you can choose your broth to be concentrated, dilute or regular.

Tomato base tsukemen with basil paste |
At first, I thought this french fusion tsukemen might taste fishy but turned out they taste so good and unique! The balance of the sweet and sour is perfect and the noodle is so Q (chewy) as well! Dipping the piece of baguette into the soup gives the taste of heaven. Seriously they should give more of those thing!

Prawn base tsukemen |
The signature dish of the shop. Instead of baguette as topping, they change it to seaweed and cabbage. The prawn broth soup taste equally nice with a very thick flavor of prawn. It somehow taste a little bit like Malaysia's Prawn Noodle (虾面) but is much thicker compare to it. You will find charsiew, menma, and chicken in the soup as you eat.
The shop can only fit 15 person at once thus the queue is usually VERY long. We waited for around 50 minutes under the cold weather (1ºC) accompanied by strong wind on our first visit. Thus on our second visit, we went on weekdays at around 3pm and we did not have to queue at all.

Yums! |
Overall, I would love to visit this place again on less crowded days. Don't forget to try out this place when you are in the city! One quick tip, try out any tsukemen first before trying this one so that you can taste the difference between a good tsukemen and a normal one :)
Hope you enjoy the post!
